Tub-to-Shower Conversion in Victoria: Tile vs Acrylic Systems

Replacing a tub with a shower comes down to two very different products: a custom tiled shower built on a waterproof membrane, or a prefabricated acrylic system. Here is an honest side-by-side — including when acrylic is the better choice.

When acrylic is the right call

If the walls behind your tub are sound, you need the bathroom back this week, the home is a rental or you are selling soon, an acrylic system is a reasonable product. We will tell you that if it is true — we would rather you call us for the next job.

When a tiled shower is worth it

If the old tub has been leaking, the house is older, you want a curbless entry, a bench or a niche, or you plan to stay for years, a tiled shower on a full Kerdi / Schluter membrane gives you a room built from the studs out — and the chance to fix whatever is behind the old surround while it is open.

Questions

Tile vs acrylic FAQ

Is a tiled shower or an acrylic system cheaper?

An acrylic system is usually cheaper and faster, because the walls are often not opened and there is less labour. A tiled shower costs more because the room goes back to the studs and every wet surface is waterproofed with a membrane before tile.

Which lasts longer?

Both can last a long time when installed properly. A tiled shower on a full membrane system can be regrouted, repaired tile by tile and updated; an acrylic system is replaced as a unit if it is damaged.

Can acrylic go over my old tile or walls?

Some systems are installed over existing surfaces. That is quick, but it also means nobody sees the framing behind them — if the old shower was leaking, the damage stays hidden. Ask any installer what happens if they find soft walls.

Which is better for resale in Victoria?

In most Victoria houses a well-built tiled walk-in shower reads as a finished renovation; acrylic reads as practical. For a rental or a quick update before a sale, acrylic can be the sensible call.
